Note:  We take this very personal journey with our brother in the theatre, Eugene O’Neill.  The piece features language and situations that, though foreign to polite society of his time and ours, are essential to his personal confrontation with the dynamics in his family life.  We take this journey with him out of respect for the truth he confronts, and the deep love for his family that he finally came to grips with.  His dedication to his wife on their anniversary is profound, as she gave him the love he needed to “face my dead.”

The Dedication:

For Carlotta, on our 12th wedding anniversary

I give you the original script of this play of old sorrow, written in tears and blood.  A sadly inappropriate gift, it would seem, for a day celebrating happiness.  But you will understand that I meant it as a tribute to your love and tenderness which gave me the faith in love that enabled me to face my dead at last and write this play—write it with deep pity and understanding and forgiveness for all the four haunted Tyrones.

These twelve years, Beloved One, have been a Journey in Light—and love…
